Internet Explorer IP Address: How to Change Yours

Your Internet Explorer IP address is the way that your computer connects to remote computers across the internet.

Think of it as your computer’s mailing address. Without one, nothing can be sent or received. But it also acts as a calling card for your machine.

So maybe you’ve considered changing your Internet Explorer IP address. Read on to discover why and how you can make the change!

Why might you want to change your Internet Explorer IP address?

An IP address changes naturally every time you connect to the internet. That’s if you don’t have a static IP. And you really only need a static IP if you need to connect to your server remotely using VPN connections.

You’ll probably find your IP address doesn’t change very often anyway. That’s unless you use a dial-up connection, and it’ll change whenever you connect to the internet.

If you use a laptop or mobile device, your IP address will change every time you connect via a different access point. You can easily look up your IP address.

You’ll notice that it gives an approximate location. Without legal documentation, no one can access your physical address from your internet service provider (ISP).

But there are occasions when you might want to manually change your Internet Explorer IP address.

Perhaps you’ve been banned from using a site. The ban will be based on your IP. The only real way to get around the ban is to use a different IP.

More importantly, your IP address identifies your connection. There’s nothing anyone can really do with it, in the same way nefarious individuals can’t really use your mailing address.

However, if someone were to hack into your connection, their activity would show up under your IP address. So if you don’t want to end up in trouble for illegal downloads, you might consider changing your IP address.

While you can do this by simply resetting your router, you can also do it via Internet Explorer.

How do I change my Internet Explorer IP address?

It’s probably easier than you think to change your Internet Explorer IP address.

First, find the Tools menu and select Internet Options. You’ll find a Connections tab in the menu box that appears on your screen.

If you’re still using a dial-up connection then you need to select whichever connection is currently active. Click on the Settings button beside it.

Within that menu, check the box that says “Use a proxy server for this connection”.

Now enter your new IP address and port number. You can get these details from a proxy service that will supply you with a new address.

Click OK.

On cable or DSL connections, click the LAN Settings button.

Within that menu, check the box that says “Use a proxy server for this connection”.

Now enter your new IP address and port number from the proxy service. Click OK.

There you have it! You can now change your Internet Explorer IP address using the settings within the browser.

If you don’t want to go that far, you can always use a VPN to hide your IP address. Check out 10 recommended VPN providers.
